Little annoyance

Hi,

I just thought I'd mention an annoyance I encountered:

For sites with a user name (and where I use different users), I made new passwords in my Macbook with the following schematic
- username1>facebook.com
- username2>facebook.com

Everything went fine, until today I realized, I cannot enter the ">" on my iPhone. So I need to change all these passwords. Not a big deal, but it might help if the OSX and the iOS app used the same set of characters...

Cheerio,
thanks for the app,
Thorsten

    Hey Thorsten,

Thanks for your message! It's good of you to point this out.

Our recommendation is that you use the '@' character for username delimiters; the character is available on all keyboards and is already a standard username-domain delimiter (which is exactly why your email address contains it).

Note that you can actually enter a > symbol on your iPhone, it's just a little more cumbersome: First hit the symbols key, then you'll see the shift key gets replaced by a second symbols key, tap that one to reveal more symbols to choose from. The > can then be found on the second row near the middle.

We're actually working on creating better support for usernames in Master Password. If you follow the '@'-delimiter scheme, your site names will immediately take advantage of this better support once it comes out.

    Cheers,
    Maarten.

    Hi Maarten,

thank you for your thoughts. Just two annotations:

    - The ">" being readily accessible in iOS depends on the keyboard used. I presume you use the NL keyboard, but it's different with both English and Swiss/German.

    - My reasoning for not using the "@” was that this would (to a minimal degree, admittedly) lower security if one of the used characters was known. Further, one could assume that the whole thing then reads "thorsten@..."
But of course, the master password is the key to security, not the site names.

    Cheerio,
    Thorsten

You're right, the site name isn't a security factor. It's so trivial for someone to guess that you shouldn't try to add an element of security into it.

Here's some screen shots of my iPhone with an English and German (Swiss) keyboard enabled.

I just thought of something: The search field in Master Password uses a special keyboard layout that's specifically designed for easily entering names and the @ symbol. It appears this specific keyboard doesn't make the > symbol available. There's a setting, though, to switch that keyboard to the default keyboard. If you go into preferences -> settings, you can enable the feature called "Dictation Search". Doing so will change the keyboard to the default (which should also add a dictation button to it if dictation is supported for your language).
